Thoughtful comedy, unexpected dance moves, and a little neighborhood pride in Fort Lauderdale.

Dr. Sunny Recommends usually shines a light on the small businesses, creators, and passionate people who make Fort Lauderdale special. This time, we are making a small detour into live comedy.

On October 3, 2026, we went to see Atsuko Okatsuka’s The Big Bowl Tour at Wells Hall at The Parker, right here by Holiday Park. We had bought our tickets about two months earlier, and part of the excitement was knowing that an artist we admire would be performing practically in our neighborhood.

We arrived as fans. We left with even more appreciation for her creativity, her intelligence, and the way she connects with an audience.

The Parker deserves some appreciation of its own. We loved the modern feel of the venue, the sound, and the atmosphere. There is something particularly enjoyable about experiencing an international performer so close to home. Even an evening you have planned months in advance can feel wonderfully easy when it happens in your own community.

The opening act gave the evening a thoughtful start by Sabrina Wu bringing transgender experiences and LGBTQ+ topics into a funny, approachable conversation. We appreciated the openness of the performance and the way humor invited the audience to listen. It felt like a fitting introduction to an evening that would keep finding something relatable in experiences that might initially seem unfamiliar.

Then came Atsuko.

If you have watched her online, you will recognize the expressive face, the distinctive haircut, and the wonderfully unexpected observations. Seeing those qualities live adds another dimension. A pause, a look, or a small movement can become part of the joke. Her presence is playful, but the thinking behind the performance is sharp.

Without giving away the material, she explores the curious details of contemporary life: our interests, our assumptions about one another, and the ways social media and gaming find their way into everyday behavior. She notices things that feel so familiar once she points them out, even if you had never stopped to think about them before.

What stayed with us was the warmth of her delivery. We appreciated the intelligence and timing of the humor, and how comfortably she could lead the room into a complicated subject. The laughter felt welcoming.

That ability becomes especially moving when she talks about family.

Her stories touch on her husband, marriage, and the small negotiations that come with sharing a life. She also speaks about her mother’s schizophrenia and her experiences caring for her. These are deeply personal subjects, with real weight behind them.

We admired how she made room for that complexity while keeping the audience engaged and laughing. She allowed difficult experiences to remain human. You could enjoy the story and still recognize the love, responsibility, and vulnerability within it.

There is a particular kind of skill in making a room laugh while giving people something worth thinking about afterward. Atsuko has it.

For readers discovering her for the first time, Atsuko Okatsuka is a Taiwanese-Japanese American comedian, writer, and actor based in Los Angeles. Her HBO special The Intruder introduced many viewers to her distinctive storytelling, followed by Father, released on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.

It captured something we admire about her: she gives herself permission to be surprising in the most creative and intelligent way, yet it can be understood easily.

Her visual identity is memorable, too. The signature bowl cut, expressive style, movement, and delivery feel connected to the same creative personality. As people who appreciate design and individuality, we love seeing someone build such a recognizable presence.

There is an entrepreneurial spirit and state-of-the-art creativity in that. She has developed her own voice, strong personal brand, and a direct relationship with an audience while keeping the work personal and inventive. We admire that combination of confidence, creative independence, and willingness to be herself.

Although Atsuko is a visiting artist, the reason for featuring her in Dr. Sunny Recommends feels very close to our usual purpose. We want to share people, places, and experiences that make life in our community more interesting. Supporting the arts and the venues that bring them here is part of that.

An evening at The Parker is also a reminder to look at what is happening around us. Sometimes an experience you might travel to another city for is waiting just a few minutes from home.

One of our favorite moments involved Atsuko’s story about teaching Jamaican dance. Without giving away the jokes, it captured something we loved about her show: the freedom to explore whatever interests you, beyond the expectations attached to your background, appearance, or culture.

It could be Jamaican dance, Japanese martial arts, a fascination with samurai, or something entirely unexpected. Your interests do not have to come from the culture you grew up in. Curiosity can take you anywhere, into a new hobby, a creative pursuit, or even a profession. You can appreciate something, learn about it, and enjoy it simply because it speaks to you.

There is something wonderfully freeing about that. Atsuko playfully challenges the stereotypes that tell us what we are supposed to like, giving herself—and everyone watching—permission to explore. We admire her for making that freedom feel so natural and joyful.
