A recent experience at Denteast reminded us just how fortunate we are to have dedicated first responders serving Fort Lauderdale.

The other day, one of our neighbors walked into Denteast in Downtown Fort Lauderdale and told us he wasn’t feeling well.

We could immediately see that something wasn’t right. He appeared uncomfortable and was having difficulty settling down, so our team asked him to sit, gave him a glass of water, and calmly tried to understand what he was experiencing.

He told us he had been under considerable stress and anxiety and simply didn’t feel right.

Because Denteast is a healthcare environment, we were able to check his blood pressure as part of our initial response. The reading, together with how he was feeling, made it clear that the appropriate next step was to get emergency medical professionals involved.

We asked if he was comfortable with us calling 911.

He said yes.

Lisa immediately picked up the phone, called for help, and explained what was happening. While waiting for emergency responders to arrive, she stayed by the man’s side, checking on him and communicating with him in Spanish to help him feel calm and supported.

And Then We Saw Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue in Action

The response impressed all of us.

Within minutes, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel arrived with the resources needed to assess the situation. Their team immediately began speaking with our neighbor, asking questions, checking vital signs, and carrying out an initial medical evaluation.

There was no confusion. No unnecessary commotion.

Just people who clearly knew their jobs.

They were organized, calm, prepared, knowledgeable, and reassuring. What stood out just as much as their efficiency was the human side of their response. They communicated with our neighbor, helped him understand what was happening, and created a sense that he was in capable hands.

The situation was handled appropriately, our neighbor received the attention he needed, and we were very happy to see that everything turned out well.

For our team, it was an opportunity to see firsthand what Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue means when it says:

“Ready for the call. Here for the community.”

More Than 100 Years of Serving Fort Lauderdale

There is an impressive organization behind those few minutes we witnessed.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was established in 1912, beginning as a volunteer organization and evolving into the full-service fire and rescue agency serving the community today. It currently serves Fort Lauderdale as well as Wilton Manors and Lazy Lake.

The department operates from 12 fire stations and responds to more than 55,000 calls for service annually (15 calls a day). Its responsibilities extend far beyond fighting fires. Firefighters, paramedics, lifeguards, emergency managers, inspectors, and support professionals prepare throughout the year for emergency medical calls, fires, severe weather, disasters, hazardous-material incidents, technical rescues, marine and dive rescues, and other emergencies.

And the equipment behind those teams is substantial. The City lists a response fleet that includes 12 fire suppression units, three aerial ladder trucks, 17 medical rescue units, a heavy rescue squad, an airport response truck, a hazardous-materials unit, and two fireboats. Apparatus and medical equipment are inspected daily, while crews continually train, maintain certifications, study buildings and hazards, and practice specialized rescue techniques.

That last part resonated with us.

When an emergency happens, the preparation isn’t beginning at that moment. It happened long before the call was made.

And when you see professionals arrive prepared, with the right people, equipment, training, and protocols, you understand why that preparation matters.

A Very Fort Lauderdale Kind of Service

There is another reason the scope of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue is particularly interesting.

This is a city built around both land and water. FLFR’s specialized capabilities include marine and dive rescue, technical rescue, hazardous-material response, aircraft rescue and firefighting, and SWAT medical support. The department also leads the City’s emergency preparedness and disaster-response efforts—an especially important responsibility in South Florida, where hurricane and severe-weather preparedness are part of community life.

Its Ocean Rescue operation also staffs 20 lifeguard towers seven days a week, helping protect more than 3.5 million beach visitors annually.

There’s even a piece of this history Fort Lauderdale residents can explore themselves. The Fort Lauderdale Fire & Safety Museum is housed in the restored 1927 Station #3 at 1022 West Las Olas Boulevard. The museum preserves vintage firefighting equipment, memorabilia, and stories while also providing education about fire safety, emergency medical response, and severe-weather preparedness.

Sometimes Helping Has Nothing to Do With Teeth

The experience also reminded us of something important about what it means to operate a healthcare practice within a neighborhood.

Yes, Denteast is a dental office.

But we’re also neighbors, parents, friends, family members, healthcare professionals, and members of the Fort Lauderdale community.

When somebody walks through our door asking for help, our first question isn’t whether they have a dental appointment.

It’s simply:

How can we help?

Sometimes that means offering someone a chair and a glass of water.

Sometimes, helping someone can be as simple as offering a chair and a glass of water.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve done that. Especially during the hot South Florida summer, we often see people walking from business to business, promoting their services, making deliveries, carrying packages, or simply doing their jobs in the heat. They come through our doors tired, hot, and sometimes just needing a moment to catch their breath.

So we ask, “Would you like a glass of water? Do you need a minute to cool down?”

It’s a small gesture, but that’s exactly the point.

Whether you’re our patient, a delivery driver carrying heavy packages, someone introducing a local business, or simply a neighbor who walks through our door—we see you. We’re all people before we’re customers, employees, businesses, or job titles.

Community care doesn’t always require something extraordinary. Sometimes it starts with noticing the person in front of you and doing something as simple as offering a glass of water, a comfortable place to sit, and a moment to feel welcome.

Small gestures matter. That’s where community starts.

Sometimes it means checking what we can appropriately check. Sometimes it means recognizing that the situation requires a different level of medical attention and calling the professionals trained and equipped to provide it.

That’s where community works best: people helping people, and knowing when to call on one another.

We are incredibly grateful to the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue professionals who responded that day. Your speed, preparedness, organization, knowledge, equipment, communication, and-above all-your care for another human being did not go unnoticed.
