A Story from London That Changed the Way We Think About Waiting
Years ago, there was a well-known behavioral experiment often shared by Rory Sutherland, a British author and advertising executive, involving the London Underground.
At the time, commuters would arrive at the platform without any real sense of when the next train would come. There were no countdown clocks, no indicators, no certainty-just people standing, waiting, and guessing. And that guessing created a quiet frustration.
Should you make a quick phone call?
Do you have time to grab a coffee? Do I have to tyo use the restroom?
Did the train just leave, or is it about to arrive?
That uncertainty was the real problem-not the waiting itself.
When the system introduced countdown clocks that clearly showed, for example, that the next train would arrive in seven minutes, something interesting happened. Even though people were sometimes waiting longer than before, they felt calmer, more in control, and significantly less stressed.

And knowing changed everything.

Why Being On Time Matters More Than It Seems
There is another layer to this story one that is less visible but equally important.
When a patient arrives late, it doesn’t just shift their appointment. It creates a dominoes effect that touches every patient who comes after them, affecting schedules, workflows, and the ability of the team to maintain the level of care we are committed to delivering.
In many environments, the response would be simple: speed things up, cut corners, move faster.

Although research on the topic has advanced over the decades, a clear idea of why some people are always late is only just taking shape.
That idea is called The Planning Fallacy — and no one is immune to it.
Future Nobel prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman and colleague Amos Tversky introduced the concept in 1979, defining it as “the tendency to underestimate the amount of time needed to complete a future task, due in part to the reliance on overly optimistic performance scenarios.”
Psychologists call this mindset “optimism bias.” While being optimistic has its benefits, such as an improved state of well-being, getting caught in the constant cycle of optimism bias can cause issues at work that impact productivity.
When Optimism Bias Works Against You
The planning fallacy consists of three elements:
- When estimating how long their own tasks will take, humans, tend to display optimism.
- The assessment an individual makes is not affected by his or her knowledge of past tasks.
- When an outside observer makes a time estimate, it tends to suffer from pessimism.
The outcome is simple: Individuals consistently assume their own tasks will get done sooner and be easier than they actually are. On the other hand, a third-party observer assessing how long a task will take for another person will consistently provide a “lowball” figure representing a pessimism bias — believing the task will take longer.
In the short term, humans can overcome the planning fallacy for routine tasks. For example, short tasks can add up during the morning routine prior to getting to work. Too many of these diversions can cause a person to leave home at a time that makes punctual arrival impossible.

It almost feels embarrassing to admit that I assumed emergency dental care was automatically going to be extremely expensive and stressful. But the Denteast team completely changed my perspective. They explained somethnig that actually makes perfect sense: emergency dentistry should be looked at like a high-quality organic sandwich or healthy meal essential, accessible, fair, and there WHEN you truly need it. Wow what a refreshing experience! Shania was amazing helping me with my insurance and making me feel comfortable through conversation as it was my first time there.Giresia the hygienist was very gentle and kind, always keeping me updated on what we're doing and tips and tricks on flossing and brush use.Boni did my 3D scan and was very gentle and patient on scanning my mouth really cool technology at this office.Dr Sunny was great. she was kind and very knowledgeable.She didn't use a bunch of nonsense of or word salads.She was upfront and honest about my treatments and I really appreciate that. I had SUCH a great experience here today. I was honestly nervous about going in because it had been a while since my last cleaning, but the entire team made me feel so comfortable from start to finish.Shania was amazing on the phone when I called to make my appointment!
